02 · The House

A house that breathes
with the tide.

Set on the headland above Porthgwen's white-sand cove, The Salt House was rebuilt in 2023 by a Cornish practice in cedar, lime plaster and glass. Every principal room faces the water; the light changes by the hour and the house changes with it.

Five bedrooms sleep ten in quiet comfort. Days end in the cedar hot tub or around the fire pit, salt still in your hair.

12 · Meet Your Hosts

Eleanor & James.

We grew up ten miles apart, left for London, and came home the moment we could. The Salt House began as my grandmother's fishing cottage; we rebuilt it slowly, keeping her doorstep and her view.

We're the WhatsApp on your phone and the hamper on your counter. Ask us for the hidden sea pool at low tide, the fisherman who sells from his boat on Thursdays, and the table at The Mermaid nobody's told the internet about.

"We host the way we wish hotels felt — present when you need us, invisible when you don't."

The House

Five bedrooms.
One horizon.

Cedar, lime plaster and glass on the headland above Porthgwen — rebuilt in 2023 around one idea: every room should know where the sea is.

The house works in layers. Sociable and open where you gather; hushed and linen-soft where you sleep.

The ground floor is one long, light-filled room — kitchen at the heart, dining for twelve, and a sunken snug around the wood-burner. Sliding glass opens the whole southern wall to the terrace, so summer meals drift outside without anyone deciding they should.

Upstairs, four bedrooms look over the water; on the ground floor, The Dune suite offers step-free comfort with an accessible wet room. Hallways are wide, thresholds are level, and the housekeeping is hotel-grade — without ever feeling like a hotel.

Outside

The terrace is
the second house.

South-west facing and sheltered by the headland, the terrace holds the cedar hot tub, a kamado grill, the outdoor kitchen and a dining table for twelve under festoon lights. Below it, the wild garden runs to the coast path gate.

The fire pit sits in its own stone circle with driftwood benches — logs, kindling and marshmallow forks provided, obviously.

House Rules

Gentle house notes.

Few rules, kindly meant — they keep the house lovely and the neighbours friendly.

10:00 amCheck-out by

Please do

  • Treat the house as yours — cook, gather, light the fire, fill the tub.
  • Bring up to two dogs (£25 each per stay) — beds and towels are ready.
  • Celebrate — birthdays, reunions and small weddings are welcome by arrangement.
  • Use the beach store: boards, wetsuit rinse, buckets, windbreaks.
  • Message us any hour on WhatsApp — we're ten minutes away.
  • Recycle — bins are labelled and collected Thursdays.

Please don't

  • Smoke or vape indoors — the fire pit circle is the smoking spot.
  • Exceed ten guests overnight, or host events beyond your booked party without asking first.
  • Play amplified music outdoors after 10pm — sound carries across the cove.
  • Let dogs on the beds or upstairs — downstairs is their kingdom.
  • Use candles or fireworks — festoons and the fire pit give better light anyway.
  • Leave the hot tub cover off overnight — the heron finds it fascinating.

Safety

Smoke and CO alarms in every zone, fire blanket and extinguisher in the kitchen, first-aid kit in the boot room, defibrillator at the village hall (4 min walk).

Security deposit

A £500 pre-authorisation is held (not charged) two days before arrival and released within five days of departure — the standard for homes of this kind.

Sustainability

Air-source heating, solar array, B-Corp housekeeping products and a no-single-use-plastics larder. The sea is the whole point; we act like it.

FAQ

Everything, answered.

Booking & payment

We reply personally, usually within a few hours and never more than a day. Nothing is charged when you send a request — your dates are simply held while we confirm.
Yes — once we confirm availability you pay a 25% deposit by secure payment link or bank transfer, and the balance is due eight weeks before arrival (we send a reminder). Booking within eight weeks? Full payment applies.
Full refund up to 30 days before arrival; 50% up to 14 days; non-refundable inside 14 days (we'll always try to re-let and refund what we recover). Date changes are free up to 14 days ahead, subject to availability.
Platforms add guest service fees of up to 14% and charge us commission on top. Direct, both disappear — we split the saving with you, which is why our direct rate is guaranteed the lowest anywhere.

Arrival & departure

Self check-in from 4pm by smart lock — your personal code arrives by SMS that morning. Prefer a welcome in person? Say so and one of us will be on the doorstep.
Outside peak weeks, usually yes — early bag-drop is almost always fine, and late checkout (to 1pm, £95) is released 72 hours ahead when the changeover allows.
On the gated drive — space for three cars plus the EV bay (7 kW, charged at cost via the app). The lane is narrow for the last half-mile; the guidebook includes a video of it.

The stay

Very. Travel cot, highchair, stair gates, bed rails, plastic tableware, beach toys and a PlayStation in the bunk room. The garden is enclosed; the sea, of course, is not — the cove is three minutes' walk with no road to cross.
Two dogs maximum, £25 each per stay. Downstairs only and not on furniture. Enclosed garden, outdoor rinse, towels in the boot room, and the beach is dog-friendly before 10am in season, all day October–April.
The Dune suite is step-free from the drive with a level-access wet room (grab rails, fold-down seat). Ground-floor living is all on one level. The terrace has a shallow ramp; the coast path beyond the gate is uneven. Ask us anything specific — we'd rather over-answer.
Celebrations for up to ten guests are warmly welcome by prior arrangement — see the Celebrations page for chef, styling and photography add-ons. Amplified music ends at 10pm outdoors; the neighbours are lovely and we intend to keep them that way.
Sourdough from the village bakery, Cornish butter and cheese, smoked mackerel, local eggs, a bottle from Polgwidden vineyard, and dog biscuits if four-legged guests are expected. Dietary notes at checkout are honoured.

Celebrations & Gatherings

The occasions house.

Ten people, one long table, the Atlantic doing the décor. Milestones deserve better than a function room.

Milestone birthdays

Long lunch outside, chef in the kitchen, fireside speeches — 40th to 70th, we've hosted them all.

Family reunions

Three generations, five bedrooms, one washing-up rota. The bunk room settles the cousins.

Hen weekends

The thoughtful kind — private chef, coastal sauna trip, vineyard afternoon. Prosecco optional, hot tub not.

Corporate retreats

Offsites for teams of ten: 900 Mbps fibre, a proper table to think around, and the sea to reset by.

Micro-weddings

Ceremony on the headland, dinner for ten at the long table. Small on numbers, unreasonably big on feeling.

New Year

Fire pit, fizz, and the first swim of the year for the brave. Books out a year ahead — join the list.

Add-on Services

We set the stage.

Private chef

Menus built around the day boats and the walled-garden veg. Dinner from £68pp; weekend residencies available.

£220
Decoration & styling

Florals, table styling and festoons by a local studio — dressed before you arrive, gone before you leave.

£180
Photography

Two golden hours with a Cornwall editorial photographer. Gallery delivered within the week.

£350
Feast & BBQ hire

Whole-fish kamado feast kit with a pitmaster to run it, or self-drive with our marinades and playlists.

£140
Cellar & welcome drinks

Polgwidden sparkling, Cornish gin bar or zero-proof spritzes, iced and waiting on arrival.
